Dr. S. Xavier Britto

Founder & Chairman

Indev Infra Private Limited

Dr. S. Xavier Britto is a pioneering Indian logistics entrepreneur, educationist and diversified business leader, best known as the Founder and Chairman of the Indev Group and a key figure in the evolution of India’s organised logistics industry. He founded Indev in 1984 with a modest customs-clearing and forwarding operation in Chennai and built it into a diversified logistics enterprise spanning customs brokerage, freight forwarding, transportation, warehousing, CFS/ICD operations, air freight, NVOCC and other integrated supply-chain services. His entrepreneurial philosophy has consistently centred on creating comprehensive, customer-focused logistics solutions and developing Indian logistics capabilities to international standards.

Dr. Britto’s journey is particularly notable for its origins in education. Born in Devakkottai, Tamil Nadu, as one of 12 children, he grew up in a family where education and service were strongly valued. His mother was a school teacher and his father a government employee. He studied at St. Mary’s School, Dindigul, and St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, before earning an M.Com from Loyola College as a gold medallist, a Bachelor of Law from the University of Madras and an MBA from the Loyola Institute of Business Administration. He began his professional career as a professor at Loyola College before moving into the shipping and logistics sector.

His entry into logistics in the early 1980s coincided with the emergence of containerisation in Chennai. Recognising the opportunity to build an enterprise around customs clearance and cargo handling, he established Indev in 1984 with a small team and limited capital. He subsequently expanded the business organically, reinvesting profits into infrastructure, technology and new capabilities. His entrepreneurial approach was grounded in the conviction that logistics providers needed to move beyond individual services and offer integrated solutions capable of simplifying the movement of goods for customers. This vision ultimately helped Indev develop into a nationwide logistics operation.

A major milestone in his business journey came in 2016, when Indev entered into a strategic joint venture with Kerry Logistics Network, resulting in Kerry Indev Logistics Private Limited. The partnership enabled the Indian business to leverage Kerry Logistics’ international network while combining it with Indev’s established domestic capabilities. Today, K-Indev describes itself as an end-to-end logistics solutions provider with capabilities covering customs brokerage, warehousing, free-trade-zone operations, transportation, international freight forwarding and digital logistics solutions. Its current network spans more than 50 Indian locations and 65 countries, supported by more than 5 million sq. ft. of warehousing infrastructure.

Dr. Britto’s impact extends well beyond logistics. Drawing on his own beginnings as an educator and his belief in the transformative power of education, he has established and supported institutions across education, hospitality, manufacturing, information technology and other sectors. He is associated with St. Britto’s Group of Institutions and has pursued initiatives aimed at developing skills and creating opportunities for young people. His wider business interests have included hotels and resorts, real estate, manufacturing, IT, entertainment and media, creating the diversified XB Group.

His contribution to logistics and national trade facilitation has received significant recognition. Indev became the first logistics company in India to receive Authorised Economic Operator status across its logistics activities and subsequently received the World Customs Organization Certificate of Merit, recognising its commitment to customs compliance and exceptional service. Kerry Indev has also been recognised for its logistics performance, including the LEAPS 2024 award for Core Logistics – Air Freight Service Provider.

Dr. Britto’s achievements have also been recognised at the national institutional level. In 2019, he received an honorary doctorate from VELS Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced Studies, with the award presented by then Vice-President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu. More recently, in January 2025, AMET University conferred upon him the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his contribution to the logistics and supply-chain sector. He was also honoured with the Dr. Shri Prakash Cargo & Logistics Impact Award at the SECC 2025 awards.

Today, Dr. S. Xavier Britto represents a distinctive model of Indian entrepreneurship—one that combines commercial ambition with institution building, education, infrastructure development and social responsibility. From starting a small customs-clearance enterprise in Chennai to helping create one of India’s major integrated logistics platforms, his career has been driven by a consistent belief that efficient logistics can enable trade, industry and national development. His enduring mission is perhaps best captured by the philosophy associated with his current K-Indev leadership: simplifying logistics to empower trade, growth and lives.
